Super Easy and Creative Cornbread Recipe Ideas

A cornbread recipe is one of those recipes you can do with zero cooking skills. It’s quick and easy, and with just a pinch of creativity, you can make it taste amazing and different every time you make it. Cornbread is typically made during thanksgiving, as a way to thank the Native Americans for giving us this easy recipe. But there’s no reason why we can’t enjoy it all year round.

Classic Cornbread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 granulated sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • Salt to taste

Preparation:

Set the oven to 400 degrees F and start preparing the batter for this cornbread recipe. Whisk the egg, milk and sugar in a bowl until they combine. Add the cornmeal and fold until it’s well mixed in the milk mixture. Gradually add the flour and mix in the butter as well. Sprinkle baking powder and fold the batter again. The contents can be lumpy, but not too dry. Spray little oil in a baking pan or muffin pan and pour the cornbread batter. Place the pan in the oven, and bake for 20 minutes, or 10 – 15 minutes if you bake cornbread muffins. Cover the pan with a clean kitchen towel, and let it sit for 10 minutes to cool off.

Southern Cornbread Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 ½ cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/3 granulated sugar
  • 1/2 stick butter or 1/4 cup oil
  • 1/4 cup bacon drippings or lard
  • Salt to taste

Preparation:

Whisk the egg, milk and sugar in a bowl until they combine. Add the cornmeal and fold. Gradually add the flour and mix in the butter as well. Sprinkle baking powder and fold the batter until lumps disappear. This cornbread recipe should be a little more moist, so you can add another ¼ cup of milk or water. Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. When heated, season a skillet with the lard or bacon drippings and place in the oven. Once the skillet starts bubbling pour the batter inside and put it back in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes, until the top is golden – brown.

Cornbread baking tips and tricks

Every household makes a slightly different cornbread. You can make it denser by choosing a larger skillet or baking pan, or a little soggier by making the batter a little more moist. You can fry it into pancakes, or bake it in a cake pan with shape of any kind. Try adding tiny bits of bacon in the batter, or line them up inside the skillet before placing the pan in the oven.

In some European regions, they even make milkless and eggless cornmeal pancakes. Just replace the milk amount with water, boil it with a tablespoon of sage and salt, and then add the cornmeal. Fold until batter is formed, mix in olive oil or butter and pour it in heated skillet. Fry it for 5 minutes, then turn the heat off and cover with a lid. Leave the skillet on the stove for 10 – 15 minutes, or until the stove cools off completely.
