This modern era came with a ton of conveniences. Food preparation is one of them, since we no longer spend weeks to shelve food for the long produce scarce winter months. We have fruits and veggies all year round. We don’t need to hunt our food. We have all kinds of delis and markets that will sell you a slice of every type of meat you can think of. Everything is prepackaged, precooked and just a bit toxic as a result. Just how toxic this new food is, we will probably know after 50 years. Used to prolong foods’ shelf life. Known to cause breathing difficulties, especially in people sensitive to the ingredient.

Sodium nitrate
The most common among the toxic food ingredients. Found in processed meats, used to stop bacterial growth. It is linked to cancer.

Potassium bromate – E number E924
Added to dough to increase volume and banned in many countries. Known to cause cancer in humans.

Azodicarbonamide – E number E927
A flour bleaching agent used in baked goods, a derivative of urea. Known to cause asthma.

Propyl gallate – E number E310
Added to – products containing fat and oil to prevent oxidation. Known to cause cancer in humans.

BHA/BHT – E number E320
A fat preservative, used in foods like cereal, potato chips, shortening and drinks. Known to cause cancerous tumor growth.

Propylene glycol – E-number E1520
This solvent is actually antifreeze and may be found in coffee-based drinks, some alcoholic drinks, liquid sweeteners, whipped dairy products, ice cream and frozen desserts and soda. Approved as safe by FDA.

Butane – TBHQ – E943a
An artificial antioxidant with controversial status. It’s added in chicken nuggets and used as a glazing agent. A well-known carcinogen.

Disodium inosinate – E number E631
Added in snack foods to enhance the meaty flavor. It’s known to cause rapid heart rate and trigger anxiety.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG) E621
Flavor intensifier added to many restaurant and fast food menus, as well as chips and other snack foods. Known to cause headaches, nerve damage, heart problems and seizures. The side effects from this toxic food ingredients are known as the Chinese restaurant syndrome, since it’s been used in Chinese cuisine for over a century.

Disodium guanylate – E number E627
Added to snack foods, savory rice, tinned vegetables, cured meats, and packaged soup and contains MSG. Known to trigger gout, asthma attacks and respiratory problems.

Enriched flour
Used in almost every product that uses white flour. It’s made by bleaching the nutrients out of regular flour and then adding them back artificially. Poor in fiber, rich in cholesterol, bleached flour is the worst.

Recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone (rBGH)
Geneticially manufactured growth hormone in cows, to boosts their milk production. It’s among the most controversial toxic food ingredients, since the 80’s. Four large pharmaceutical companies, Monsanto, American Cyanamid, Eli Lilly, and Upjohn, developed commercial rBST products and submitted them to the FDA for approval. Monsanto was the first to receive approval.

Refined vegetable oils
Includes soybean oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil, canola oil and peanut oils. High in omega-6 fats, these cheap oils are thought to be responsible for the epidemic heart disease rates.

Sodium benzoate – E number E211
Used in salad dressing, pickled veggies, jams, fruit juices and carbonated beverages. As a studied toxic food ingredients, this preservative is a known carcinogen. It may cause damage the DNA, and combined with vitamin C, it becomes a a cancer causing chemical linked with leukemia and other types of blood cancers.

Brominated vegetable oil BVO
Keeps the flavor in soft drinks suspended. Banned in Europe and Japan, this additive is a poison and may cause birth defects and organ damage. It’s often not listed on food labels.

Propyl gallate – E number E310
Found in packaged meats, popcorn, canned soups and frozen dinners. This antioxidant is added to foods containing oils and fats to prevent oxidation. Shown to block estrogen production. Banned in some countries, but deemed as safe by FDA.

Substance used to lower the amounts of fats in foods. It prevents some vitamins and minerals from being absorbed. Can cause digestive problems and anal leakage. It is banned in Canada and Europe.

Carrageenan – E-407 or E-407a
Stabilizer, emulsifier and thickening agent used in prepared foods, including baby formula. Can cause ulcers, gastrointestinal problems and cancer.

Polysorbate 60
A thickener mostly used in baked goods. Can cause reproductive problems, organ toxicity and cancer in high doses. Deemed safe by the FDA.

Camauba wax – E Number E903
Used mostly in chewing gums, gummy bears and glazing foods. Can cause rashes, dermatitis, acne and hair follicle inflammation.

Magnesium sulphate
Used in tofu and beer production, and is known as Epsom salt. It’s believed to depress the action of neurons and cause low blood pressure, low blood calcium, decreased breathing, skin flushing, vomiting, and muscle weakness.

Parabens – E number E216, E217, E218, E214, E209
Used as a food preservative, and found in almost all cosmetic products, parabents can be listed as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben or butylparaben, depending on the product. They disrupt hormones in the body, cause allergies and could be associated to breast cancer.

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose or CMC
Used in ice creams, breads, biscuits, cakes, chewing gum, peanut butter, margarine and almost all other packaged foods, including milk and dairy products. Considered not to be absorbed by the body, this food additive can cause bowel inflammation, microbiota related metabolic syndrome and colitis.

Aluminum – E numbers E173, E520, E521, E523 E541, E545, E554, E555 E556, E559
Used as a food additive as coloring and a stabilizing agent, this metal circulates the body and persists in the bones. Many studies point to Alzheimer’s and kidney diseases, as a result of aluminum exposure.

Artificial Sweeteners to Avoid

Sugars and artificial sugars particularly, are the top leading cause of obesity in the world. They will ruin your gut flora, digestion, hormonal balance, and may cause severe headaches. Here are the main and most popularized culprits:

Saccharin, Aspartame and Sucralose
Artificial sweeteners used in baked goods, cakes, cookies, jams, tinned fruits, chewing gums and many drinks. They are the leading cause of obesity in the world, and the related health issues.

High fructose corn syrup
A sweetener made from corn starch, from genetically modified corn. Causes obesity, and a long list of metabolic disorders.

Acesulfame potassium – E number E950
Used in combination with other artificial sweeteners in sodas and ice cream. Associated with cancer and tumors in rats. It also proved dangerous for pregnant and nursing rodents.

Sucralose: Splenda
Splenda hired Monsanto’s PR team to steer the public opinion away from its dangerous uses. Studies showed it causes cancer, increased diabetes risk and tumor growth in mice.

Agave nectar
A natural sweetener derived from the same cactus from which tequila is made. Advertised as a safe option for diabetics, this natural sugar is among the toxic food ingredients. It is loaded with fructose, the worst type of sugar. It causes insulin resistance, inflammation and liver diseases.

Tert butylhydroquinone TBHQ – E number E319
The food industry uses it to extend shelf life of fish and fish products, together with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) E number E320. Together they are known carcinogens, causing papillomas, stomach tumors and damage to the DNA. E320 is banned in California, while E319 is considered safe.

Artificial Food Colorings to Avoid

Food colorings are added to almost every food, not just desserts. Many studies proved they are the culprit behind serious health problems, like asthma, allergies and hyperactivity in children, as well as tumors, cancers and cerebral diseases in adults.
