Mashed potatoes can be a tasty side dish to almost any meal. With the right mashed potato recipe, your lunch or dinner can get a wholesome twist. The stuff we buy from stores is almost tasteless, and you need to add some spices in order to be eatable. Plus, the amount of time you need to make the store bought stuff is nearly the same as a homemade mashed potato recipe. So roll up your sleeves, find the right pot and turn on the stove, ’cause potatoes are about to be boiled.
Homemade Mashed Potato Recipe
- 4 – 5 large potatoes
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup of milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add some salt and add the potatoes. Leave the skins on, they are easier to peel once the potatoes are done. Boil them for 15 – 20 minutes. You will know when they’re done, if you poke them with a knife and it passes through to the center easily. Once done, let the water out and fill the pot with fresh, cold water. Once cooled off, peel them and prepare the pot for mashing.
Use medium heat to melt the butter. Add the milk and mix them up in the pot. Add the potatoes inside and turn the heat off, or to a minimum. Use a masher if you don’t have an electric beater, to squash the potatoes to a fine paste. Make sure they don’t burn at the bottom in case you leave the stove on. Sprinkle some salt and pepper, mix everything well, and transfer to a serving plate.
Mashed Potato Recipe Variations
We get really bored with the same recipe over and over again, so it will be nice to mix things up in the kitchen from time to time. To this easy mashed potato dish you can add carrots, onions, green peas, or garlic. If your kids are bored with the same recipe, you can even add beets and make the mashed potatoes red and even tastier.
If you add onions, make sure you sauté them before you add the milk in the pot. Use medium – high heat, as onions cook very fast, within a minute or two. Otherwise, they’ll get dark and bitter and ruin your dish.
If you want to add other veggies, you can use the frozen kind, just make sure you unfreeze it first. You can add them frozen too, but they will leak water inside your potatoes and make them soggy at one spot and dry at another. Make sure you mix them well before serving. If you use fresh veggies, steam them and add them hot. They will release their aromas better.
