Why shop for seasonal foods exclusively?
Every fruit and vegetable is in season in some part of the world. that means that the fruits and veggies we buy in stores are in season either where you’re at or on the other hemisphere. Not all seasonal food is healthy, and it doesn’t mean that if the produce you bought is not healthy, even if it’s not in season. Most often, big supermarkets and grocery store chains order the seasonal vegetables and fruits from parts of the world where they are actually in season, but many do not. that means the fruits and veggies are grown under artificial circumstances, in order to mimic the conditions they require to grow. This process is not an unhealthy one, but it does produce products with a smaller amount of nutrients than the natural one.
If you care about the environment, shopping for fruits in season actually supports your worthy cause. Artificially grown produce requires special conditions that often takes up a lot of energy, produces unnecessary emissions and uses soil that should otherwise rest during that period of the year. And if you’re not especially concerned about the environment, another reason to buy seasonal food is the price. When veggies are produced locally and seasonally, their prices go down. By shopping for veggies and fruits in season, you actually help the economy in your country, by not paying for taxes and shipping by importing from another region of the world.
Of course, shopping seasonally and locally is not always possible. There are exotic fruits and veggies you can’t grow in your region, but for those you can, make sure you do! And of course, there are ways to preserve your food to make it last longer, so you can enjoy it throughout the year.
